TORONTO, ON – As the leading voice for Ontario’s marine industry, the Ontario Marine Council (OMC) is closely monitoring developments in Washington, where President Trump plans to impose a 25% tariff on goods imported from Canada and Mexico.
Originally set to take effect on February 1, 2025, the tariffs have been delayed by 30 days following negotiations between leaders from all three countries. While this temporary extension provides some relief, uncertainty remains for Ontario’s cross-border supply chains and key industrial sectors, particularly those supported by the marine sector every day. These discussions will be critical as Premiers from across Canada, including the Premier of Ontario, travel to Washington on February 11 th to advocate for strong Canada-U.S. trade relations.
OMC members—including shipowners, shippers, port operators, shipyards, and the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation—play a vital role in ensuring the smooth movement of goods across North America. As negotiations progress, OMC will stay actively engaged with members and stakeholders, providing timely updates on key developments over the next month.
