ONTARIO MARINE COUNCIL UNVEILS STRATEGIC PLAN 2024-2027: NAVIGATING ONTARIO’S MARINE INDUSTRY TOWARDS GREATER PROSPERITY

Toronto, January 16, 2024 – The Ontario Marine Council (OMC) proudly announces the release of its inaugural Strategic Plan, outlining a visionary roadmap of the province’s marine industry over the next 5 years. The plan, titled “Navigating Ontario’s Marine Industry Towards Greater Prosperity,” is a collaborative effort by industry leaders and stakeholders dedicated to advancing the economic, environmental, and social potential of the marine sector.

Steve Salmons, Chair of the OMC and CEO of the Windsor Port Authority, expressed the OMC’s commitment to fostering collaboration and sustainable growth within the marine industry, “Our vision is to position the marine industry as a key solution to economic and environmental challenges, and our strategic plan outlines key priorities that will guide us on this journey.”

The OMC’s inclusive approach involves stakeholders from ship operators, ports, shipyards, terminal operators, cities, ferry operators, and marine-focused suppliers. This collaboration aims to pool resources and knowledge to create a cohesive vision for the industry and communicate opportunities to governments.

Key priorities outlined in the plan focus on increasing awareness of the industry’s importance, advocating for a balanced modal shift to marine, improving infrastructure, supporting the marine workforce, and promoting environmental sustainability. With the release of its Strategic Plan, the OMC aims to establish a strategic presence and align its actions with the first ever Ontario Marine Transportation Strategy launched this past fall by the Minister of Transportation, the Honourable Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria.

Maguessa Morel-Laforce, OMC Executive Director, said, “The OMC urges industry stakeholders, government bodies, and the public to join together in realizing the ambitious goals outlined in the plan. By doing so, Ontario’s marine industry can thrive, contribute to economic development, embrace sustainability, and provide rewarding career opportunities.

The plan is available in both English and French.
